I received the following e-mail yesterday from Aetna. They are clearly relaxing underwriting rules to get more group sales.

Gift Card Bonus Program extended! You earn an extra $25 per enrolled employee on any Aetna Small Group medical plan now through the end of 2011.

Underwriting changes: Recent changes to Small Group underwriting guidelines are making it easier to conduct business with Aetna!

Payroll records now accepted for your new business cases!

That's right! You asked, and we listened! We will now accept payroll in lieu of quarterly wage and tax statement for submission of your new business sale. Payroll records should include all employees to be covered, hours worked and withheld taxes.

Groups of 21 to 50 eligibles can now use PRIOR carrier bill!

Current prior carrier bill can be submitted in lieu of quarterly wage tax statement when at least 75 percent of the eligibles are listed on the billing statement.

Participation rounded down

The calculation for determining participation will now be rounded down and not up! Example: 75 percent participation for a 5 life group is 3.75 applications however our new calculation will round down so we will require 3 applications for participation to be met.

Extending the signature date on the employer and employee applications 90 days

Aetna will now accept applications dated up to 90 days old versus the previous requirement of 60 days for new business submissions. This includes master applications, employee applications, and AZ universal medical questionnaires.

Group Medical Questionnaire update

Great news! Groups of 26 or more eligible can now utilize the Group Medical Questionnaire when a minimum of 20 enroll! Previous guidelines required 26 or more enrolled.

Spousal/dependent waivers

If an enrollee is married with children but elects not to cover his/her spouse and/or dependents, we no longer need the waiver section completed for the spouse or dependents. The enrollee just completes for who is enrolling and we are good to go!

Multi-state groups

Have out-of-state employees? We have made it easier for you to come to Aetna! We have updated our guidelines to allow MST groups when the majority of employees reside in Arizona. If your group is headquartered in Arizona and the plan sponsor chooses PPO plans, we will allow the out of state employees to receive the in-state PPO plan and rates, as long as, a network is available in their home zip code location.

New business electronic submission

All quote requests, prescreens and sold new business submissions can be uploaded electronically via an FTP server! No more undeliverable emails due to file size and no more multiple e-mails for one request! All agencies and/or brokers must be registered on Producer World before we can begin the approval process. For additional details or to submit your information to get approval for access, please contact your local Aetna sales executive.

Looks like they are trying to make it easier.

I ran numbers with them a couple of years ago and they were high.

Maybe it's time to revisit.
