Can you just assign the renewal to an agency, while the first year commission is pay directly to you by the carrier?

Don't know, but why would you want to? If you leave that agency, I believe the renewals would be theirs.

I'm more upline friendly than most on here, but I can't imagine (m)any scenario(s) where assigning commissions is a good idea in either direction. It's more work for an upline and more risk for an agent/downline. Actually, I'm being a bit dramatic, if you are getting paid any type of a salary then I can see why it would be assigned, but it's unlikely much of that is going on for folks here.
