ATTN: Health Agents in california.....

I am new to health and life insurance in california. I understand that calling on new home owners and offering health or life insurance is not a practical way of getting business... right?
I'm thinking of purchasing health leads or make cold calls to gain experience first. Then to cross sale life insurance after the health sale is made or getting closed.

So far, they don't provide leads or base salary of any kind. What is a fair commission split for self generated business. Should I just become a broker and deal directly with a few of the insurance carriers myself? assurant, aetna, blue shield...

Any advice/guidance would be great.

Andre.
