Captive to Independent?

I have been with Farmers Insurance for about 4 years but all these rate increases I couldn't compete with any Independent agencies that have 5-6 carriers to shop around. What are your advice on shifting from captive to independent?

I thought I was doing really well only to slowly see that I was spoon fed early to make me feel like it was all my work.

I am still new to the insurance world so any help is much appreciated.
How is it like in the independent world for these issues if you're a brand new company?
