Has anyone here held client appreciation events in order to boost retention and generate referrals?

If so, what type of events? How often? How well have they been attended?

If you have TIVO, Oprah is always on.

With respect to the events, you're back to "what's your objective"? Ultimately you want everyone to be happy and provide referrals. Most of the ones I'm aware of can make people happy (free meal) but referral generating, not.

Every time i do go out with a potential business owner, i do pay for the lunch. A potential customer will not know what benefit they get until they actually use your services (you cannot lie or else they will leave)
