Hello,

So I am very interested in insurance as a future career possibility. I'm about to be finished my 2-15 in Florida. I'll make this to the point.

I am registered in florida as a juvenile sex offender for Lewd and Lascivious conduct when I was 16 years old and was adjudicated a delinquent, so 12 years ago. Nothing else since then. I have spoken with a specialist from the FL chief of finance office and they specifically told me that since my charges were from a juvenile and handled in juvenile court, the time ban of 7/15 etc years does not apply. So I am able to get a license. Felonies and Misdemeanors show Pass and Pass on background checks but I do come up in the national registry which shows on the Background Check.

The more pressing question knowing this, is doing something with that license. Do you , people on this forum, think I have a chance getting appointed at any company under a captive agent? Also, what are any options anyone thinks I have. Example: Independent Etc. I want some idea before I feel as though I've dumped too much into a dead end without thinking of every angle that may cause an issue for me.

You don't have any court-ordered restraining orders against being around children, right? That would be an obvious issue and wouldn't be worth pursuing at all in that case.

You'd at least need to show additional documentation about your case... but I'm not sure how insurers would feel about being represented by someone who is on the national registry for such past actions.

No I do not, my only restrictions are the default FL laws. I am in the process of obtaining certified copies of my court documents to show as far as proof goes that it was DJJ handled.

Honestly the best place to ask is to the insurance companies themselves that you want to license with. Here you aren't going to get significant help as none of us can speak for who may or may not contract you.

I think DHK has the main point, showing up on a sex offender registry is probably going to be a non starter with most insurance companies. That said, you won't know till you ask the companies. Expect to hear some "no's" as you do this. Maybe great training for being an agent as we hear more no's than yes's in our careers.

If I were you, I would contact the Florida Department of Insurance and speak to them. Let them do a background check on you. They would be able to give you a yes go br an insurance agent or no, this career would not be for you.

Having a career in insurance takes 5-8 years to build up a book of business where you start making a 6 figure income. It's this way for every agent. You need to decide why you want to be an agent.
If it is the money, you will be hungry for 5-8 years. You have to commit to 12-15 hour days to build your sales up to a level to build you to making $5000-$9000 a month. But remember you will also have overhead to pay every month too.

I got into insurance because I love people and I love helping people. This job is 60% servicing your customers. 30% marketing. 10%writing policies. In your first 5 years.

Can you get wealthy? Yes. If you work 15 hour days some nights and weekends. Your focus, you will need to eat, drink and breath sales. But it still will take 5-8 years building up your book of business. If you go captive, and later choose independent, you will give up your book of business and start back at zero again.

1st hill you need to tackle, is your felony. Call the Florida Department of Insurance.

Tough case bud... but to be very honest... if I were building a team... I would be very wary of your situation.

I appreciate the response. The first step I actually took before looking too hard into courses was just this. I called the Florida Department of insurance, whom told me to reach out via email so a specialist could review my case and inquiry regarding the offense and registration aspect. So I did, upon hearing back from them, they specifically told that when it is time to get finger printed for my license I will need to send in certified court documents showing I was a juvenile during the case and that It was handled within juvenile court ( Which it was ), if these documents indeed show that I was a juvenile, the time bans applied to different felonies would not apply to me.

So that issue has already been cleared and I know I can get a license from the state of FL. This next issue is the one regarding companies handling of myself being registered.

Are you able to have it expunged from your record or is it on for life?

Unfortunately for me, but reasonable for the public, no I am not able to. It sticks, the only part visible to the public is the registration online as the Juvenile SO. Which I can and will request to be removed when the times comes. But thats a long time, my other option is moving to a state where my offenses would not require myself to register because of differences in state laws.
