Left vs Right has nothing to do with a particular political party.
There are right leaning Democrats which used to be called "Blue Dog" or "Reagan" Democrats.
And there are left leaning republicans which are more correctly classified as Jeffersonian Republicans or Libertarians.

Both sides are moving farther and farther from the center to the extreme pole of their side of the political spectrum
yes and both sides fighting each other instead of working together for the good of the country

Doesn't sound good to me because there is no reward for excellence.. And, that is why it will never succeed,, The Pilgrims learned that lesson after almost starving to death.
Precisely. And far too often the left takes the overly optimistic (Borderline denial) approach that it's just the weak that can't or won't take care of themselves and need help. I'd strongly argue that there's an entirely different segment of humanity that dwarfs in numbers those who are incapable that isn't be labeled properly.
They're called the lazy and incompetent moochers.
Those who are fully capable, yet sit back and cry victim while watching others step up and maintain society, and still claim they deserve their fair share.
I'd type more but the Mcdonald's kiosk here at the airport that replaced the jobs of three people who whined that they deserved more money in an entry level position and got replaced is letting me know my order is ready.

As the left goes farther left and the right goes farther right they come to find tha the earth is indeed round and rather than fall off their respective side they end up meeting at a point known as authoritarianism. My problem with Trump is not that he's a conservative, it is that he is an Authoritarian. My problem with the extreme elements of the Democratic party is not that they are liberal, it is that they too will arrive at authoritarianism if allowed to take their positions to their natural conclusions. Neither is healthy for the country.

Don't mean to disagree, but the Republican party of today would still make most of all the liberal forefathers turn in their grave.
History being the litmus test... we've long ago started down a road of no return when we see the current conservatives seen as far too right. But no need to worry long... when the newest crop of coming of age voters can vote themselves the healthcare you paid for and waited for years to receive... the world will change... and if your too old or sickly... you may just get in the way... and remember, we are teaching a new generation of doctors what to do when an abortion is botched.
