Dental Insurance TMJ

(caveat, not an agent.)

Depending on the benefits wording in the plan and the benefits one has already used in the current plan year, some dental insurance plans may give you coverage for a dentist examination and some of the x-rays needed for initial evaluations. (1)

If orthodontics are involved and you find a plan that covers adult orthodontics, one could possibly get some help there.

Another very remote possibility,

If it is possible to attribute TMJ to physical issues other than dental
and
there are some physical therapy treatments for TMJ
and
you could get a doctor to refer you to a physical therapist for TMJ therapy

you might get some insurance coverage for the therapy.

(1) a personal experience with x-rays relating to root canals.
Dentist says you need a root canal. I went to endodontist. They do a special x-ray. Front desk people say insurance doesn't cover this, pay in advance. I did. I had two dental insurance policies at that time. Endodontist was in-network with one of them. So I got a network price reduction and 2 ins co payments toward the charges. There was also an exam coded as a standard dentist visit for pain exam. I got some coverage for that too. I would expect things like that might be possible for TMJ too.

When your family general dentist says you need TMJ evaluation and treatment and gives you the name of a specialist, I do not recommend tossing the technical term "quack dentistry" into the conversation.
