Has anyone bought an email list and marketed to those prospects with any success?
Interested in a vendor that you could give certain demographics on what kind of email list you want.

If you can get a 1 to 3 percent return on direct mail or cold calling email marketing might be more profitable.

Thoughts?

Most email marketing companies require a double opt in meaning you have to get permission to send emails to that email address. Buying a list will get you in hot water very quickly especially offering insurance products.

Familiarize yourself with the CAN SPAM laws.

Plus having your IP tagged as SPAM will get legit non marketing emails being blocked by the receivers ISP.

I would think there has to be email vendors that have the data. If you follow the rules or email marketing I cant see where you would get into trouble.

Is this much different than facebook on other social media marketing platforms?

Apples and Oranges...

Social media marketing doesn't come with penalties of:

The penalties associated with the CAN-SPAM Act are significant. Certain fraudulent activities and repeat offenses include the possibility of imprisonment for three to five years. Otherwise, violators of the act are subject to actual damages, statutory damages or fines of $250 per violation, with each unlawful message to each recipient being a separate violation. Statutory damages can go as high as $2 million.

Your IP that you use to run your business can be affected. It's easy to send out thousands of emails and all it takes is a handful of complaints to have your IP Blocked.

Also, keep in mind that insurance agents are held to a higher standard than those peddling widgets or nicknacks.

Ask yourself this, If I received an unsolicited email from someone offering insurance which requires me to give them my SSN, DOB, Billing info, medical history?

:nah:

Are you guys joking? email marketing is the most effective marketing that a company can do.

CAN SPAM are a joke --- our open rates are regularly between 27-52%, i am sending to 300k emails --- with a deliverability rate of 98.2%

The Definition of Spam

The word "Spam" as applied to Email means "Unsolicited Bulk Email".

Unsolicited means that the Recipient has not granted verifiable permission for the message to be sent. Bulk means that the message is sent as part of a larger collection of messages, all having substantively identical content.
A message is Spam only if it is both Unsolicited and Bulk.

Unsolicited Email is normal email
(examples: first contact enquiries, job enquiries, sales enquiries)

Bulk Email is normal email
(examples: subscriber newsletters, customer communications, discussion lists)

Best of luck.
