I have an exchange client that will be aging into Medicare in August. Will their individual health exchange plan that they are on automatically cancel OR will they need to cancel the plan manually on healthcare.gov?

Let's see....

Option A: Spend about 5 minutes through the backdoor and cancel the policy

Option B: Assume both the FFM and the carrier will handle the policy correctly then spend countless hours on the backend fixing the issue.

Hmmm......

You have to cancel at HC.gov between 60 days and 15 days before effective date of Medicare. To avoid screw ups, I do it between 15-30 days. Do it front door, back door, or a phone call to marketplace. Then call the carrier and tell them to change billing method to bill in the mail after July payment is made to current carrier. The policy will lapse with non payment, or you might get lucky and HC.gov sends a cancellation notice within a couple months.

***If there is a spouse on the plan, and is continuing coverage on the marketplace plan, you must do it on the day before (the 30th or 31st of the month) the medicare effective date of the other spouse. PITA
