Forced to Pay Insurance for Unlicensed Driver

I finally gave them an ultimatum and told them I was moving my business by the end of day on Monday. My agent called and got a waiver of some type so my collision and comprehensive was reinstated and my son was completely dropped from my policy. They were overly concerned about my 5 autos and the abundance of opportunities for him to drive illegally. He is a "scooter boy" now and has 10 more months of no driving before he gets the keys back. He is on his own for insurance at that time! He made a huge mistake and will paying for it for quite some time. The license checkpoint that got him may have saved someone's life, possibly his, and saved us from a lifetime of legal and emotional issues. We had a conversation about drinking and driving the day of his arrest. They just don't listen!!

Please tell me they pointed out and had you sign a statement telling you that the insurance will not be there if he goes and drives now. That is why they wanted him covered before, just in case he went and drove anyway.

In 18 yrs in insurance I have heard so many *he will never drive* only to have to pay out big claims when they do...because 99% of the time, they do drive.

NC doesn't normally have excluded drivers. You better hope and pray he doesn't drive and hope and pray he doesn't have a claim. This could possibly turn into an insurance fraud situation if he does.

Now that he is "dropped" from coverage and or excluded

If he gets in a wreck in YOUR vehicles and is liable for damages, your insurance isn't going to pay, but YOU are still liable since it is YOUR vehicle

So you have to either kick him out, pay the premium or risk him taking the car out for another drunken night on the town

Chances of him driving your cars is higher than you will ever admit to

Shop around for a company that will explain these things better that your company has. Exclusions usually do not hold up in court. Just my 2 cents. I own a agency in Louisiana and things are a little different here. But your agent should have handled the situation better.

Best of Luck, Dad
Please remember RIGHT NOW .....everything thing is FRESH and new (even for you)
and just like a guy that gets caught cheating he is 'sorry and WON'T DO IT AGAIN' and probably means it but 5,6,7 months from now is a LONG time away.....

and human beings are more committed to their 'diets'...at the START than we tend to be 5 months later.

Again, the kid is human and so are you....Today.... he'll NEVER drive but
5 1/2 months from now after
Timmy's done 'so well' and
it's raining and
it's just around the corner and
it's just one of the older cars
THAT'S gonna be the 'real' TEST.

He still is your son, he's only a 21 y.o. kid...
Ask yourself how many times has a parent grounded a kid for a month
only to 'allow' him to JUST watch 'American Idol'.... 2 weeks and 5 days later?

Just saying be careful....we all make promises NOT to cross lines that appear easy not to cross in month 2 or 3 but can become distant memories by month 8 or 9.

* Let's hope all goes well either way remember we are dealing with a 21 y.o. kid mistakes are part of the process..

P.S. Let me clarify, I'm ONLY speaking of the temptation and opportunity to drive while 1000% sober...I in no way advocate or give any room for drinking and driving and yes he ass needs kickin' for that no doubt my point was after seeing your boy working his butt off 5 or 6 months from now running to the store 'real quick' will 'seem' a lot more REASONABLE then than either of you would even dream of right now when things are still raw.

Just like when a mother is upset about the coffee table leg on the 6th on June and Timmy is grounded for the SUMMER by the 4th of July he's back outside and Momma's angel again.......

Hey thanks every one to share your ideas. And we should always go for a good insurance compony. And componey have different polices .
