First meeting today with a new accounting client. Learned that the owner had a meeting couple of days ago with a broker and is in the process of enrolling himself, wife and two kids under a primo group plan. Twenty other employees in the company cannot afford this top of the line plan, and the employer is not willing to help with premiums.

So, any problems bringing in another carrier for a voluntary major med plan for the other employees?

Thanks!

There are conditions in which dual plans with multiple carriers can be involved, as long as the required participation is met. Usually it is best to have the same carrier administer both plans.

As for "voluntary" major med, I assume you mean a PRD plan. Other than supplemental (mini med) plans, there is no such thing as a group voluntary major med (no employer participation).

How is this going to be even close to meeting the carrier's participation requirements?

As for "not helping with the premiums" most carriers require employer to contribute at least 50% of ee premium?

???

Sounds like they did a management carve out. If the owner is not willing to contribute the required 50% for the rest of the group - then it would be an excellent opportunity to offer them individual. The owner may be willing to allow you to speak with the employees on site.

I believe in texas you still have to have a certain amount of people for this...and depends on the company.......

You may be right - but in CO, we could do a carve out based upon differing levels of management. In this case, we may have been able to carve husb and wife out if they are the owners or board of directors.
