What are your thoughts about the health insurance business if health care goes socialistic? Do you see the market being good yet for a few years?

Re: Health Insurance under Obama?

Universal socialistic health care has been discussed at least since the Truman administration. My bets are on the industry continuing, pretty much as it is now, for many years to come.

I was at a meeting for medical professionals a few days ago that had a few MD's in attendance and they were pretty rabid about how bad Obama was going to be for health care, especially the point you bring up...basically their position was the backlash will be that less and less good quality people will seek out medical degrees. Hence the true decline of health care and really good professionals to administer to the population.

I am phasing out of P & C and looking to be in the health market, I would like to specialize in Medicare, LTC and individual health.

Just trying to get a feel from those of you that are in the field.

Docs, especially PCP's, are already squeezed. Med school grads are opting for specialties over primary care. Even without any change, that doesn't bode well.

Aging boomers will need PCP's and a lot of those are limiting the number of Medicare pts they are willing to see. Some boomers will turn 65 only to find out their PCP will suggest they find a new one since they are not taking Medicare pts.

Medicare reimburses at a lower rate than any commercial carrier or private pay pt. Imagine what happens if we get "Medicare for all".

We will end up with the same issues they have in Canada.

Long waits, reduced level of care and even higher taxes.
