How does deductible work for 2 people?

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I'm confused...

My son is on my insurance. We have a $500 individual/ $1500 family deductible. I've been told embedded. If I meet the first $500, then I go into coinsurance? Then he has to meet the other $1,000 before he hits coinsurance? It makes sense to me from what I've read if there are 3 or more people on the plan, but not two.

He only needs to meet the $500 deductible.
