Let me ask you... What is your experience selling over the phone. How was your persistency?

I don't know about other people's persistency, and I'm not a telesales agent per say. But I get 8 or 10 leads per month from one company who have orphan policyholders in other states, who I sell by phone. Because that company requires a wet signature, I mail the paper app to them to sign & send back. I also ask for a check for initial premium, even though we could just draft it. By doing those extra steps I weed out most persistency problems. But then I only place about 20% of them, due to the extra effort required on their part.
I don't know if it's still true, but a couple of years ago I was in the home office of one company, where the VP of life sales told me that they had such a problem with persistency from the big telesales shops that they weren't allowing them to quote preferred rates anymore.
