Insuance Coverage Lapse. What to Do?

My policy for my insurance expired on 12/31/2015. I did get new insurance and it is effective on 1/9/2016. I did not realize that I had a lapse in coverage.

On 12/28/2015, I was admitted into the hospital until 1/5/2016. Is there anything I can do to have coverage during the time I lapsed? I need to know if there is an extension my previous insurer can offer me? would COBRA apply to this?

I assume you are referring to health insurance?

Why did the policy lapse? Did you cancel? Forget the premium? Did the policy not renew? I'm confused.

Yes this is for health insurance. I thought that I was covered as of 1/1/2016. I didn't realize that it went into effect on 1/9/2016.

On the federal exchange states its 1/1 or 2/1 or 3/1. Or a magic stroke of luck or dumby csr etc ...never seen a non first of the month effective date except for short term medical insurance which is not compliant with the LAW.
