Some doctors “accept Medicare assignment.” Those doctors count the Medicare Part B program’s reimbursement rates as payment in full. Other doctors will treat Medicare patients but want to charge more. Those doctors’ excess charges can be up to 15% more than the standard Medicare rate.

The doctors who take Medicare assignment are, in effect, in the low-cost Medicare provider tier. The doctors who treat Medicare patients but bill for excess charges are in the equivalent of a second, higher-cost tier.

Perhaps . . .

I rarely run into xs charges but almost all (96% is thrown around mostly) of docs take assignment. Maybe they are the docs that charge more, maybe not.

I have read Allison Bell's articles before, going back to pre-Obamacare days. Seems like a nice lady and reasonably well educated but as long as she has been writing about health care she completely misses the mark sometimes.

Those that can't, teach . . . . or become writers . . .
