Unless you can find a good career shop in your area, and finding them is a challenge, try to locate an experienced agent who is willing to bring you into his/her practice and teach you the business in exchange for a commission split. That can be a win-win situation.
Reading books can provide some insight but there is no substitute for OJT under the guidance of a master.
If you are going to be self taught, find some other way to pay the bills while you are learning.
