Older Consumers More Likely To Hold Off Buying New Obamacare Plans:

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Older Americans not yet eligible for Medicare are more likely to pay the 2014 penalty rather than purchase health coverage, according to new research from HealthPocket and Deft Research, a market research firm which analyzes the health insurance industry.

Researchers found younger consumers are more likely than their older counterparts to purchase insurance in the new health insurance exchanges starting in 2014 because they will be lower income and therefore receive larger subsidies and benefit from lower age-based premiums than older buyers. The analysis findings contrast with what some have previously speculated.

Research was sound, conclusion was flawed. Research is only valid if premiums and subsidies actually end up becoming what was estimated. Any variation would nullify data collected under different parameters.

Also important to note, it was 18-64 y/o SUBSIDY ELIGIBLE respondents. They only evaluated Silver premium and assumed a 3:1 age band. When presented with more than one choice, across a population of eligible and ineligible, across a nation where age banding is only in some states, these results will not extrapolate.

I love/hate that I have such an affinity for statistics.

The title of this thread could say, "Older and Younger Consumers....."

Excerpt:
"Progressives are becoming increasingly concerned at the prospect of millions of uninsured young people deciding to push the easy button next year by simply paying a very small fine[1] rather than obtain health coverage. Consequently, they have turned to a new argument to get those under 30 to act against their self interest by signing up for the Exchanges. Now we are being told that Obamacare will be a good deal for young people in the long run since whatever short-term losses they incur in the form of higher premiums will be more than made up later when they are older and get to pay lower premiums than they would in today’s market."

What a STUPID argument! When they are 50, they can buy a plan and pay the same as the next 50 year old, if they want to. Progressives...(sigh)
