Please Educate Me on how to Shop for Life Insurance

Oh geez.

He's a young guy (I'm assuming) and he's looking for some guidance. Cut him some slack. No wonder he doesn't want to deal with an agent. He thinks they are all going to treat him like this.

You're damn right on this one.

Poor fella. Did him get him widdle feewings hurt? You're a do it yourself kinda guy who wants the experts to do it for you at no charge.

Your current agent is SelectQuote. If you don't want to ask them the questions you asked here, then find another local agent who will spend some time with you for an opportunity to gain your business. Just remember, if you are going to talk with a local agent with no intention of doing business with them, you are wasting their valuable time. At least respect the agent enough to not do that.

The problem many of us have with your approach is that you've already made the purchase so to speak and now want to ask questions. Those questions should have been asked BEFORE completing an application. Secondly, they should be directed to the person who is getting paid (SelectQuote) or to an agent who you genuinely will give an opportunity to earn your business.

The reason that people are giving you grief (warranted or not) is that you are asking after purchasing. You say that you did not purchase yet... and technically you have not until you pay the premium. But you have committed verbally to using a particular agent/broker. If they are not able to answer these very basic questions then you should find a new one.

Did you sign an application for a specific carrier? Or did they tell you to just go through the med exam first? What forms did you sign and what company was branded on the forms?

If you are doing a medical exam then you most likely signed an application for a specific carrier. This is not a binding contract.... but it is an "intent" to purchase from that carrier provided you are happy with the health rating (ie premium).

Call centers such as selectquote are "turn and burn" type operations. They are not going to give you the individualized advice that an experienced independent agent will provide. Many of the large term selling outfits also have "preferred" carriers that they tend to send most of their clients to... often they are the carriers that the company has the highest paying contracts with...

Basically you want an independent agent who is going to first address your needs and ask a lot of questions. In other words, they will:
Take the time to help you decide how much coverage you need.
Take the time to find out about your health & explain how that will affect the rates.
Take the time to understand your future needs.
Take the time to address all of your questions and concerns.
And then make an informed recommendation based on all of those factors... and actually take the time to explain why that recommendation helps to address all of your needs (both present and future).

You also need to ask a lot of questions.... such as "why do you feel this is the best policy for me?"... or "how will this policy help me (insert concern/need)?".
If the agent does not have a concrete answer to your questions then they are probably not a good fit for you. (and their recommendation is potentially not a good fit for your needs).

Being in CA, there are 2 excellent life agents here on the forum that could help you. WinoBlues & DHK. Look them up and contact them for some guidance.

But let this be a life lesson. Do not allow yourself to be pushed into a decision that you do not understand. And once you have committed to doing business with a professional (maybe you did not understand that is what you did), especially once you have already initiated a purchase, do not expect other professionals to go out of their way to help you with issues that should have already been addressed before purchasing.
