Get a VoIP and use a custom phone number for your mail campaigns. You can just forward the number to your main office line. But In Doing so you can now see the actual contact rate and calculate a true ROI
When we talk about DM, the clients are sending the cards back to us. What is it you're talking about?
If you put a phone number on the piece as an alternate form of contact you can use a custom number to track those results and see if people are actually picking up the phone and calling from the piece.

And how many people usually call on a lead mailer instead of mailing it back?
I would suspect very few. I do have one client that does mail and basically points to nothing but calling back. I would suspect on a traditional FE card the callback rate would be low, but if the piece was specifically designed for it then it might pull different results.
