Small Group Rating Bands for Medical Underwriting

States that currently allow medical underwriting are going to have the most rate movement come 1/1/2014 due to the new underwriting rules.

I am working on a document to try and have a national list of what states currently allow in terms of rate-up for medical underwriting in the small group market.

This is what I have so far and some of my info is dated, so please feel free to correct any of my notions. Also, some carriers have artificially lower bands than the states allow for.

12 states have no medical underwriting for small group. These are NY, VT, CT, ME, MD, MA, NH, NJ, OR, WA, MI, and CO (MI allows underwriting by for profit carriers and non HMO)

CA and RI allow for +/- 10% (lowest to highest is 122%)

FL allows for +/- 15% (lowest to highest is 135%)

NM, NC, ND allows for +/- 20% (lowest to highest is 150%)

AL, AZ, AR, GA, IL, IA, KS, MN, MS, MO, MT, NE, OK, SC, SD, TX allow for +/- 25% (lowest to highest is 167%)

NV, UT, WV and WI allow for +/- 30% (lowest to highest is 186%)

LA allows for +/- 33% (lowest to highest is 201%)

AK, DE, IN, OH, TN, WY allow for +/- 35% (lowest to highest is 208%)

MI for profit carriers allow for +/- 45% (lowest to highest is 264%)

ID, KY allow for +/- 50% (lowest to highest is 300%)

DC, HI, PA, VA have no limits
