Liberty is paramount to democracy. The democratic component of our republic allows us to vote away our liberty and it seems that's the path we're on.
The US economy has been classified capitalist/socialist for the past many decades, according to the almanacs. The truth is, while any economic system would be just fine if we all could be trusted, capitalism is the most efficient system and most effective check against misconduct.
Mankind's demands will be supplied and, if The US doesn't supply it best, our competitors will. If mankind is raping the earth, our rape (and efforts to minimize the impact) are as natural as the polar bear. The bear doesn't pitch in at all.
Socialist-minded voters promote things like high corporate tax. It makes no sense to give incentives to corporations to leave The US when they pay zero tax anyway. Individuals pay 100% of all corporate tax. That's money we might otherwise give to effective charities or, at least, keep it in the private sector where waste is minimized. The US should be the most corporate-friendly host in the world if we want to compete. How is that not obvious to everyone?
It's all in the hands of the voters who, in my state, the majority are wack as crack. Look at the opportunity lost due to the bullet train debacle. CA could have fixed The Salton Sea, (creating a huge tax base), built desal plants, dug more reservoirs, kept the central valley operating at max capacity during droughts, invested in more wildfire countermeasures, and addressed the enormous homeless problem instead of starting a train soon to be obsolete due to autonomous vehicles (if it were ever completed). What a waste. The CA mindset of voters seems to be spreading across then nation. This crazy state has every form of tax revenue imaginable and several that other states don't enjoy at all. CA should be awash in surplus. Yet, the majority of CA voters demand more tax. They made that clear last November. So, you're right to be concerned about how people vote.
On the national level, when the debt chickens come home to roost, the younger voting majority will be like, "You old timers put us in this mess when you voted for all those wasteful, bloated public expenditures and saddled us with this debt. We'll be seizing your assets now." Who could blame them?

If you think the political system in the USA is a good one, then I don't know what to tell you.
The politicians are owned by the lobbyists, who work for the corporations and private interest groups. The politicians are merely political prostitutes.
The lobbyists/corporations write the bills (laws), not the politicians. That's why many laws favor the rich.
Bailouts and tax breaks for large corporations, but no help for the poor.
Always money for war, but not to help people.
Etc.
I could go on and on.
That's what Nick's (the OP) main point was before the thread went sideways into a heated capitalism/socialism debate.
The only thing to do is diversify your business and don't solely count on Medicare.

I understand i'm waaay younger in this game then everybody, but i honestly can't comprehend why anyone would completely invest all their energy into a product that is so unstable. Health insurance went away with ACA sooner or later medicare products were going to go away. Learn to sell more than one product and invest outside of insurance and you'll be fine nothing lasts forever lol.
