Starting an Independent Agency

Hi Mark,

I know you can get direct appointment. You do not need a cluster unless you need a specific company. All these people that are talking telling you that you can’t do it, well yes you can.

However, make sure you have enough money to live off it. You will also need a office because most of them required one. Doesn’t matter how bad the office look like.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Im in the process of going INDY right now so i can't help but ask. Who can you get a direct appointment with? Name anyone, because most of the companies I have looked into or called directly all tell me I need an upline.

Where you located? I’m in Florida.

I am in florida too. South florida

You have to sell yourself. When they call you and ask about your information, that’s who you have to sell yourself. Learn about the company and know their activities in Florida. Pretend they help build a building for a charity. Then act like you were there act be familiar with it.

Don’t give up.

I started my agency December of last Year. And I barely got my license 12-20-2017.

I’m appointed infinity, state national insurance, national specialty, universal, century national and more.

I’m appointed with 14 cause that what show on my license.

Look you going to lose money because everyone requires a office. Doesn’t matter how big or small. You must have a legit office. I started mines on a 2nd floor closet (office)

Another company that are taking people or whoever looking for appointments link below

Newagent.uaic.com

I sell them too. They have a shitty system but are competitive.

Good luck.

Appreciate the info thanks. I'm 2-15 not 2-20 though. I do intend on getting my 2-20 just not till i have established the life side of my company. If you know of any life insurance companies that will direct appoint that would be of great assistance.

I have to look into it because I haven’t sold one yet lol but I still have them. All I can remember is AIG and a lot more but don’t remember them. You just have to call them because I have no experience in life or health and they are letting me sell it.

So you work for a independent agency or the actual life company.

Well you have a decision tree here. I'll lead you down one path, but it is biased.

"Begin with the end in mind"- 7 habits of Highly effective people.

Decision #1:

What end of the Ins Spectrum do you want? if you answered P&C keep reading. If ''Other" wait for the others to respond

Decision #2: Captive or Independent.

Captive:

Pro: They will teach you a lot but inevitably you will go Indy at some point in your career. Another Pro, they will subsidize your life for a time.

Con: The District Manager will push too hard or force life on you or cut your commissions or change your contract, or, ext, ext. Your Captive will take rate increases and kill your production and you will have one price point while others dissect your book one policy at a time.

Independent: :

Pro: Control expenses. Get higher commission. Higher conversion. Higher retention. All of those factors equal more money.

Con: Starting out. Getting knowledge. Your personality type could sink yourself.

Decision #3:

Once you decide Indy is for you, in the next week or 22 yrs from now. The question will be how to do it. Your options include:

Buy an agency.

Join a group.

Become a producer for an agency.

Get direct appointments.

Get an agency that provides the back end service so you can hunt full time.

You decide which one is best for you.

Decision #4: What group should I join?

There are a lot. Consider the following. NOT ALL GROUPS ARE CREATED EQUAL! They range from good, better and best.

Any group claiming to be best of class should provide the following:

  1. Transparency
  2. Training and support
  3. Carrier Alignment
  4. and a great Contract
Give me a call, shoot me am IM. Good luck and have fun with your choices.

I have been in Insurance for 13+ years and the great thing in this industry is you can choose to never stop learning. Your learning curve is never ending. Meaning you will never get bored.
