SPD help!

My client's SPD vendor is getting very specific whether the list of 6 voluntary benefits offered by the carrier are pre or post tax.

All good with reasons why pre or post, except that 2 of the plans are optional either way, depending on whether they add certain riders.
Accident plan and cancer plan are OK as pre-tax, unless the EE adds a rider that should be post tax due to lump sum benefits that would be taxed when received. In that case best to pay taxes on the payroll dedicated to that premium which is relatively small, instead of paying taxes on a lump sum benefit for cancer or accident disability when they really need the money at claim time.

The ER can make the deduction options on those two fixed at what is best for EE. In other words, pre-tax on those 2 plans unless they add the riders mentioned, then the premium is post tax. EE decides yes or no on riders, but not on whether the premium is pre or post tax.

What do most SPD's do with this situation?
