Trading up/down within a MedSup plan

Does anyone know if a policyholder can trade up or down "within" a company's MedSup without any pre-x questions? (eg. A to C ... or F to A)

If you mean "without underwriting", then they definitely can't go up and most carriers won't allow you to go down either.

The reason for this is that the reason a person might want to downgrade is because they are want to save money. From a carrier standpoint, they are providing essentially the same benefit (ie. Plan F to Plan C) at a reduced premium. Or they can get $300+ for Plan F vs. Plan D and only have to pay the Part B deductible so they profit by about $165 for doing nothing.

Hope that is clear and makes sense.

Thanks for the input. I was looking at HIPAA portability regs and it seems that Medsup policyholders should be able to switch carriers without underwriting if they have had continuous coverage like any other health plan. Do you know if Medsup is excluded from this?

Yes, they can change plans without pre-ex but in most cases must pass underwriting.

Mr. Greensky is correct. Also, Medicare alone counts as creditable coverage. Unless you are in a state like Missouri or the prospect is in a GI enrollment period then health questions will have to be answered.

Here in IN there is no such thing as pre ex on supps. They either accept you and pay everything or they tell you to take a hike.
