Using Saturation Mailings

With the results people are getting with internet p&c leads and the challenges of contacting people by phone would you get a better result by using a saturation mailing and follow up by door knocking?

My thought is a saturation mailing makes it a lot more efficient to door knock behind the mailing--you know every house got your direct mail piece--and now you are making a second touch for those you get to speak with.

Anyone have experience with saturation mailings and how the results compared to other marketing efforts?
 
I have a chimney to start my grill with. Since I don't buy a newspaper, I find junk mail is a good substitution. I really like the auto mailers that don't have the plastic window.
 
You never know until you try. Response rates will be lower than targeted mail, but so will mail costs and your follow door knocking is much simpler.

Be sure to target your geography carefully first. You can research census level geo data at the U.S. census website.
