Website Design Training Resources Needed

I recently hired someone and can see that he is going to be valuable to my consulting operations. I want to get him trained in website development. He has dealt with programmers, in a liaison capacity, to design websites but I want to see him get basic website development training for himself and then take it step by step, to continue his education.

Any recommendations as to on-line training courses that are cost-effective and really deliver results for a serious student?
