I just took a new gig with a friend that has a pretty established P&C/financial planning agency and I'm gonna try and ramp up their life and health stuff.

I just found out he's paying $5k/yr for SEO. The site is at Atlanta Insurance | Atlanta Investments | Wickham Services

Can someone take a look at the site and tell me if it's well set up and what the hell they could be doing for that kind of coin? I've been reading up on this stuff, but at this point just know how much I dont know about this stuff. From what I've read that kind of outlay doesn't make much sense...

Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

For $5k yr on SEO, it's money not well spent.

Semrush shows they are top 20 for only 9 keywords. Not #1-3 for anything.

The site isn't really set up or optimized for lead generation, looks to me like your typical "agency website".

He should fire this person ASAP. Like yesterday.

google (US): Keywords: 34 Search traffic: 0.55 Traffic Cost: $9.18
His traffic is worth 9.18 cents per month, if he bought 100% of the traffic he gets organically via ppc.

Any idea what he paid for the site? It's not a bad site, but I'd fire the SEO folks.

If he thinks that's a good deal he'd love what I could do for $2k/year.

Yep, $3,500 for the site, $400/mo for the SEO.

Its not really a lead generating site, although I think it could be, but I like it too for what it is. I'm pretty new there so dont want to go in acting like a know it all, especially since I don't know much.

They've got a 40 year old well established business, and do a little bit of everything, so its a little challenging to do lead capture and SEO for individual policies..

What would you do for $2k, Josh? He's open to change and obviously willing to spend the money.

I just checked out semrush for the first time, I think I learned more about SEO from looking at that site for 15 minutes than I have in the many hours I've spent reading and watching videos. Interesting stuff!

For under 500 dollars per year I believe he could rank page one for most local keywords.

He could buy the traffic he's getting from that SEO now for literally 9.18 cents per month in PPC ads.

He'd be better off buying the google local ppc ad package that is like 400 bucks a month, and get way more effect than he's getting now.

If he paid 3500 for that site, he overpaid by about 3250 dollars.

Depending on whether he wants to target the P/C more or investments, I would do some keyword research.

Say – P/C

I would probably target

* Note – I usually take a few hours to research keywords, so this is just for example purposes.

Atlanta Car Insurance
Home Insurance Atlanta

Current title tag:

Atlanta Insurance | Atlanta Investments | Wickham Services

I would change it to this:

Title Tag

Home Insurance Atlanta | Atlanta Car Insurance And Financial Planning

Or something to that sort – I generally try to keep the title tag around 60 Characters, but anything from 60-70 including spaces is ok.

Current description:

Marietta insurance company Wickham Agency offers health, auto, life, business, and financial investment services throughout metro Atlanta, Georgia

See any of your target keywords in there?

I would do something like this.

Description:

Marietta insurance Company offers home insurance, Atlanta car insurance, financial planning. A trusted advisor for insurance and investment needs since [insert year]

Notice how the keywords are just about exact, the same way as they are in the title tag.

Currently – there are no meta keywords on the site. I know that “google doesn’t read them” Put them in anyways!

Meta keywords: home insurance Atlanta, Atlanta car insurance, atlanta financial planning, investment, insurance

Optimize your images

Images

<img src="http://www.wickhamservices.com/wp-content/themes/wickham/ui/slide-1.jpg" width="960" height="470" alt="" />

Notice the image name – slider-1.jpg. Re-name it to something relevant to your page. ie. target keywords.

Then, populate the alt tags

Then, implement an aggressive – ethical link building strategy and you should be on your way – shouldn’t be hard to dominate that market since it is a local niche.

SEO Content writing:

Optimize your content to include your keywords. How is google supposed to know what your site is about and rank your site if you don’t include the keywords in your body content?

As for the theme – My designer could have put something together like that for around $275.00. No biggie tho (well, the past is the past ) – You should see the money I wasted in the past learning from the school of hard knocks.
