Male, 42, somewhat healthy, but overweight, on bp meds. He is in sales and is looking for the lowest rate for 2 years of disability coverage until age 65.

Who is the best and cheapest?

Best and cheapest are not synonymous, especially with DI.

Ameritus (formerly Union Central) has a good white collar DI policy. So does Guardian.

But 2 years is a very short benefit period. Most agents recommend a 10 year benefit period if they dont recommend a "to 65" benefit.

Those are good recommendations. Lately I have had good success with Principal also. 2 year benefit period is very short. A lot depends on the profession and if they are the type of person who will want to return to work in the same or another field. You probably already know, but pay close attention to the definition of their occupation for how the benefit would pay.

If you are having trouble finding a suitable individual policy, see if you can get a group policy for him and any other common employees. Principal will do a group discount with as few as 3 lives. Works very well for small companies with an owner and a few key employees. Good luck!

A lot of people do not realize this, but Assurity is becoming more and more competitive for white collar DI.

That's what I prefer to sell in Michigan. But, not sure if it's the cheapest...they are sometimes sticklers with rate ups on the weight and health issues and they do regularly order records when the apps aren't nice and clean.

How? Definitions, pricing, or something else? Assurity is not non-can are they?

Pricing, and as far as how much per month in disability benefit. Up until about early this year, or late last year they did not offer that high of monthly benefit. Now, they offer up to $15,000 a month in benefit. They were always geared toward blue collar and middle incomes based on the normal 60% of An individual's income guidelines.

Pricing is competitive with companies such as MoO.

Own occupation definition of disability is only good for two years with Assurity.

And this product isn't available in California. They have a different (older) product though.

It says it is only good for 2 years, but then it shows an Own Occ Rider as well... so does that mean you can add the Rider and get Own Occ for the life of the policy?

Ray, the attachment shows that they can add NonCan as a Rider.
