The other thread came to mind today when I got this call. Neither of them eligible for Medicare due to not enough quarters. He farmed. She was a teacher. Sole income is her retirement at $2500/mo. They are eligible for $1250/mo in subsidy. He is applying for VA, but just starting that process. I suggested he get coverage via exchange plans until that comes through.

Total premium $147/mo.

Does HC.gov ask if a person is eligible for, or receiving, care from the Veterans Administration? I don't recall.

Yes, it ask if you have insurance such as Medicare or VA. They do not and ARE NOT ELIGIBLE so they can go on exchange. Sad thing is, they called their P/C agent, who also does Obamacare, told them since they are over 65, the are not eligible.

Mr. Gordon, in your post that started this thread, you stated that this gentleman is eligible for VetAdmin coverage and is in the process of applying. Perhaps he should cancel the application with the VA, since you're going to enroll him and his spouse in a subsidized Major Med.

Interesting option. We will have a conversation on their options today. He lives close to one of our VA centers and wouldn't have a deductible on that coverage... just thinking of the differences. Yes, on real insurance you can go non-VA and get treatment, etc.

All US Citizens, and permanent residents who have resided 5 years or longer, may participate in Medicare. The 40 Quarters requirement is only to receive Part A for "free". They can still pay a premium for Part A and participate.

Now the trick is enrollment periods. Usually the first quarter of the year, with benefits to begin 1 July.

If you are looking for something temporarily, check with local HMO's. The only national plan that covers seniors waiting for Medicare that I am aware of is the Medicare Bridge which you can check with your local brokerage outlet.

Good luck
