I haven't used them for personal lines at all, but for commercial lines, I don't like the fact that they insist you use their online apps rather than submitting ACORDs. Plus, I don't think their carrier selection is that great.
Granted, I'm from PA, and I have two decent direct appointments at my disposal, and I do 99.9% commercial, so you may have a different set of circumstances.
I would check out Morstan or Jimcor (I think Jimcor operates in NY) as they both have a pretty good selection of carriers, accept ACORDs, and generally turn things around pretty quickly. Also check out Smartchoice for personal lines, because they will give you direct appointments with Travelers, Safeco, etc. at least under certain circumstances.
