Do i have to get an auto insurance when i buy a used car? or else, they don't sell the car to a person who doesn't have an auto insurance? I currently have a lease car that will be returned this August. But i want to get a used car soon so that i can work on the car, but i won't be driving it around. The car will be in my garage until i return the lease car and get an auto insurance. I live in Irvine, CA
Any ideas?

thankyou

Re: Auto Insurance Asdf

Why would you want to take the risk? You would be taking your car out for test drives at least. If you get involved in any collision and are found to be uninsured you could be in deep trouble! Buy the minimum insurance necessary under CA regulations which I think is 15/30/5, instead of risking getting your license impounded or something. Hartford (http://hartfordauto.com/Insurance-Quote/auto-insurance-quote.shtml?PLCode=640018) is affordable and gives additional benefits on different coverages too. That might save you some money.

I'm agree with you. For a very big issue such as that, you have to make sure and don't take the risk, because you might end up nothing in the long run.

Check your state laws. In MD if you don't have tags, you don't need to carry insurance. So if you just want to keep it in your garage to fix it up, just don't tag it.

No requirement to insure the car if it is not licensed to drive in California. There is a practical reason to carry at least minimal liability though.

Most carriers have rates for 'stored' cars that are not being driven, usually not much money. I would add comprehensive coverage if the car has any significant value, just in case of something like a fire. Obviously, no need for collision coverage.

If the car is registered with anything other than a non-op, California will suspend the registration on the car if it is not insured.

i think the best way is to just pay for the collision coverage then..lol..i might test drive at low speed after fixing stuff..thx guys

I wouldn't take the risk of driving the car without insurance. But you could save on registration by opting to non-op it. With the registration savings maybe you could buy some insurance to cover you for a while.

In California, the law requires you to have auto insurance if you drive the auto. If you're short on cash get a liability insurance with minimum coverage. If the car is paid off and parked safely, then you have noting to worry about.
