Auto Insurance Premium Did Not Go Up After DWAI

Exactly 3 years ago I got a DWAI out in Long Island New York, since then my insurance premium has been going down every renewal period. Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful that I'm not paying more. My question is if I buy a new car and get a quote for insurance, will they run my license and find out? Also how could this slip under the radar? I was sure they would have found out by now. Should I even attempt to purchase a new car, or just wait for the 5 year mark and play it safe? Thanks in advance!

ps I wasn't driving my car so there was no vehicle impounded, and I live in Queens.

not all companies run MVR's every year, sometimes its only 3% of their entire book, and they have to pay for the MVR, so that can get expensive,

Consider your self lukcy, but dont switch companies because then they will run your MVR. Generally if you switch cars, no one runs a new MVR

Correct, switching companies will cause it to get pulled. Switching cars by itself probably won't, but the 3 year point is probably a limit on the company being required to pull it anyway.

New York plays by different rules. In California, 3 years is the bigger part of the magical number, 10 years for the rest on a DUI. I've had clients where I issued an SR-22 and they haven't pulled the MVR in 3 years. Now, adding an SR-22 you would think would be an automatic trigger, but not always.....

Consider yourself very, very lucky.

VERY,VERY,very...very LUCKY.

Imagine how much it would cost a company to pull MVR's on their entire books of business. Now if you had a claim it is a good chance they would pull the record too. But adding a car shouldn't change anything...but switching companies would cause the MVR to be pulled as others have said!

Many companies today use a software like "expert underwriter" which is a program that chooses which policyholder to run an MVR on, due to the cost of the MVR. 1 of the main triggers is a change to someone's auto policy. I would tell to try and not make any changes for at least 5 years from the time that your MVR became "clear" again.

Not sure if it's different in New York, but here in Ohio, all of my companies only go back 35 months for a DUI as far as rating is concerned. So even if they do find it you would now be in the clear.

btw, DWAI? driving while alcoholically inebriated? :1confused:

don't whack anyone intentionally?:twitchy:

States are different. Here in California, while the biggest rating impact is for 3 years, a DUI will cost you a good driver discount for 10 years.

To me, its a bit extreme, but voters are easy to get to pass things like this.

DWAI is for Driving While Ability Impaired, which is turn is a traffic infraction that carries no points, and thank you Dan for your sharing of information, you have answered some question that I have been wracking my brains with, thanks again
