Spoke with auto-owners today about their expansion into my state. They will be appointing in my area in mid to late 2010 and I thought I'd do some digging ahead of time. On paper they look like exactly the kind of company I like to align myself with. Any input from current agents ?

Auto Owners is second to none on claims handling. They treat the customer and the agent fairly. The only weakness they have had in the past is their technology but that has improved dramatically in recent years. You will not go wrong contracting with them. In MO I would pick them over any carrier for personal lines. They also have a decent commercial appetite. They are not always the most competitive but you will soon learn how comforting it is to know they are handling your clientele. A++ Rating. You will likely see more feedback like this moving forward. Go get em.

Gulliver:)

Be careful about some of the policies though...Auto Owners at least in the State of Minnesota, has just implemented on ALL homeowners policies that they will be paying ACV on all roof claims. Not a good thing for someone whose roof is older, and clients and agents should be aware of this.

Aside from that, they have been a great company to work for! I would highly recommend them!

Auto Owners is one of a small handful of companies that are rated A++.
I will second the motion about their claims department second to none. I can't speak to the ACV roof issue but that would indeed be worrisome if that spreads. They are competitive in personal lines in my area. For commercial lines they like garage and contractors.
However, their life insurance sucks.

Oh yes, I should add that they are very easy to do business with. Some companies don't get that being hard to do business with chases biz away but AO does not fit this.

Can't imagine there aren't "any" sour grapes out there

Thanks for all the input, I will be meeting with them this year

Their policy is to deny the claim and invent a reason. Actually told my friend that my shingles just "fell off the roof". The shingles were up there for five years.

Hmm Why were they talking to your friend about your roof? I'm sure you didn't leave out any details...

I'm not sure what the issue you had with their claims dept. We have AO along with 19 other companies and their claims dept is right at the top of the list with a couple of other companies we have. As I stated, I don't know about your experience but our experience is very positive.

Auto-Owners Insurance is the "16th largest Michigan-based company on the FORTUNE 500 list," according to PR Newswire. "With $5.017 billion in revenue for 2009, [the company remains] the second largest property-casualty mutual insurance company in the nation."
Auto-Owners history can be traced back from its present management to the early leadership of Vern V. Moulton who, in 1916, organized Auto-Owners Insurance Company in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan The infant Company had no capital and was housed in one room of a bank building.
