how difficult is it getting appointments with these companies?

a lot of my business comes from non standard so having these companies is crucial especially since you can charge broker fees in ca

Start contacting those reps and try, if you have a track record of sales with those carriers you will likely get a yes or two. But Don't limit your new agency to non standard only. Learn some new products and grow. Good for you.

of course im not going to limit myself to just auto but in CA we can charge broker fees and that would bring in extra $$.

Non-standard auto is easy to get appointment. Since you worked for an agency you might know the reps just call them and ask them to appoint you.

You might also add GMAC and Titan, Foremost they have good rate on auto.

I Just got progressive appointment and those guys are great they send me the welcome package along with the plaque to stick on the wall they even included the screws for the plaque:D:laugh:

Kemper (Unitrin) is excellent nonstandard. Also contact Access Insurance - they ONLY do minimum limit nonstandard so it's a niche product but they're giving out appointments like candy.

GMAC is worth a look too as is Foremost.

Also what is with you nonstandard brokers charging broker fees? That seems like a d**k move considering the premiums are already high. I was able to broker over 3 cases las year simply because I didn't gouge the client for an extra $100 - $300.

I don't do much in the way of non standard but my understanding is that the retention is so low (something like less than 40% of policies remain in force for 12 months strait) that you need the income from broker fees to offset the cancellations.

The retention on the non standard auto policies is low. I don't know of any agencies that don't charge broker fees in the LA area.
I'm not saying charge 300-400 Broker fees, but we usually do anywhere between 25-100. Some of these policies are like 175-300 for 6 months.

You guys should also check out CENCAL and Anchor general. THey are pretty good.

I don't know about CA, but in other states, GMAC has made recent and drastic changes to both their rating and underwriting to where they're not much help with the non-standard crowd anymore.

For example, in Ohio the following has changed in the past year or so:
  • no new apps without prior coverage.
  • SR22 filings are very pricey compared to other non-standards.
  • young drivers under 21 now have to pay premium in full.
  • have become a lot more strict on credit dings by either requiring large down payments or refusing to write the app.
