Comp for ACA Plans

Own a pretty good size medicare insurance agency, I am thinking of expanding to offer the ACA plans, here are my questions :

1) certifications , do I go through AHIP?
2) FMO that you would recommend, or can one go direct with Carrier?
3) telephonic and / or electronic apps? Or only paper ?
4) can I sell a plan and the client get a subdidy?
5) what is the Comp like?

Thanks,

All good questions. We may have discussed them before. Can't remember.

Or, maybe Try digging through the few hundred threads on this forum.

RObert,
You are late to this party for this year. A vast amount of the opportunity will end on 3/31/14. THe only thing left until next OEP is SEP situations which will likely be few and far between.

1) certifications , do I go through AHIP?
-Depends on your state, you're either going through the federal training via CMS if you're in a FFE state, or going through the state insurance department (likely using the same education providers as your Life/Health license).
2) FMO that you would recommend, or can one go direct with Carrier?
-Must go direct with each carrier individually, with few exceptions.
3) telephonic and / or electronic apps? Or only paper ?
-Paper!? What is this, the 1900's? It's all online through the exchange portal, paper is a fallback that's near impossible to use (unless you're in Oregon, where they are still in the 1900's and only have paper).
4) can I sell a plan and the client get a subdidy?
-Yes, so long as they qualify
5) what is the Comp like?
-Varies from nothing to something, depending on the carrier/state. Some are offering the same as they were before (5-10%). Most are offering a bit less. Some are offering a lot less. Next to none are offering more.

You're going to want to do some research into your state specifically for comp/training/appointment. Keep in mind, starting a week from now, open enrollment is closed.

The enrollment ship has sailed for all intents and purposes, it will be back next November, so you should have a lot of time to prepare and get used to the system with the random SEP stragglers that will trickle in during the "off season".

He's a new forum guy, he asked some good questions. Cut him slack, maybe?

I'm with RayNY on all the answers.

Start researching SEP (special enrollment period) and COBRA subsidy on the forum. Its pretty confusing and that's all you are going to be dealing with until Nov 15th.

Good luck!

Thanks, my goal is to help the spouses of the people that are turning 65. Usually a man has a wife that is 1-3 years younger then him and the wife is usually on his Retired group plan.

A lot of times it makes a lot if sense for said retiree to drop the retired group plan but due to his spouse being younger it kills the deal.

My goal would be to evaluate the situation and having the ACA plans would help. Especially sense the couple is retired maybe the wife would qualify for a subsidize plan.

Thanks to those of you that had informative comments, I really appreciate the help.

You are right on the wife's age lagging behind the husband killing the deal, this happens a lot around here. I have an inside track on the two electrical utilities, it is almost never a good idea for one of their retirees to stay on the retiree benefit plan, but when the husband is aging into Medicare and the wife has health issues, they are stuck paying over $1000 combined to remain... that is until now.
Good luck with your practice and the addition of ind. health.
