Completey Confused

Hello,
I've had ankle arthritis for over a decade and it's gotten to the point where I will need surgery but, I'm also at the point where I cannot work anymore. I can barely walk once out of the house, without pain in every step.
I am not sure how to go about approaching disability or what I need to do, to even start the process. Any help/advice would be sweetly appreciated. I'm in Washington State, 53 years old.
