Considering A Career Move to Insurance....

Hello everyone. I was looking for info. on insurance careers and came across this forum. I thought this would be an excellent resource, as instead of reading data, you're talking to the agents themselves!

A little about myself to qualify, I've been in sales since I graduated high school. I've done everything from retail sales to telemarketing to outside sales. Currently I work for a Verizon Agent, and while I do some outside sales for them, the money just isn't where I want to be at. I'm 30.

Over the years, because of my sales background, I've been contacted by numerous agencies interested in recruiting me. I live in Columbus Ohio, btw.

There Hondros College in my area that offers the courses and exam preps, and the rates are affordable. What all do you guys recomend as far as education, and just learning more about the field in general?

And also, living in Columbus, I was wondering what you think are some good companies to consider. I've been contacted by American Family Insurance, AFLAC, AllState, Farmers; among others....these seemed like the best. What are your opinions of those?

Also, how hard is it, when you start out, really? I've heard that some of these places like American Family pay you advances to help you get started. What does that mean? I mean, how much do they generally pay you, and do you later pay them back? Also, do you know of any agencies that actually pay you some sort of base salary? That's really my biggest concern starting out is the money. I'm accustomed to making right around 30k a year, and I know ultimately in this field there's potential to make a lot more than that....but I'm worried about rent, bills, etc. when starting out.

Thank you in advance for any replies. I know I fired off a lot of questions here, but I'm really interested in this field and want to learn as much as possible before I take the plunge...

The life and health insurance and annuities license can earn you a six figure income in a few years. How you get there is the question.

I tried captive situations, always to be disappointed with management. I learned by jumping around and then established my own agency at home.

It's very hard work to start a business. Don't expect anything much in the way of salary. They will give advances.

Good luck

I don't think any company in the insurance business pays a salary --at least not for sales. Salaries are reserved for managers who may or may not come up the ranks from sales.

Advances are just that --a prepayment of expected commissions. No commissions and you have a serious problem. As for AFLAC and some of the other companies you ask about -just read some of the threads here.

You have the same problem everyone has who is faced with leaving comfortable but low income for hopefully higher income but without any guarantees. Nobody can help you with that choice.

Steer clear of AFLAC. Some places will pay a salary for a short time at the beginning. I am not familiar with the property and casualty companies but I know that Western Southern, Metlife, and American General all pay a salary for a few weeks when you start.
