Hello. Since my father passed away last year, I have been doing most of my mother's driving for her using her car. Doctor appts, shopping, etc....

My question is, should I put myself on her car insurance policy? I have my own insurance with my own cars. I don't know if that covers me for driving my mother or not. Thanks for your advice.

Ask your agent. However, you should be covered. At least that is true on all of the policies I have ever had.

Unless you have tickets or accidents, or you are under 30, being listed as a driver and rated on your Mother's policy may get her a lower rate. Insurance companies usually want information on anyone driving a car they are insuring on a regular basis, even if you have your own car insurance.

as long as you dont live with her......

Be cautious, not all insurance policies are identical, some contain exclusions of coverage in the event of an unlisted driver operating the vehicle, if that exclusions is in your parents policy you will be paying any and all claims out of pocket...additionally there could be something called a step down liability clause...steps down the coverage to state minimum when an unlisted driver is driving the car and has an accident.

I think that it would be your mom's insurance coverage since that is the vehicle could involved in an incident. You may have a different automobile insurance coverage provider but at the moment you are driving your mom's car. So, i don't think there is a need to reinsure it on your name.

Thanks everyone. She actually lives with us now. I guess I will be calling her agent!

Why not save more money by adding the car under your policy as she now lives with you? Most car insurance companies will need to have all cars registered under both or one name if not married. See if your mom is willing to sign the title over to you. It might be cheaper in the long run. Whatever the difference she is paying the auto company can be yours. Of course, this is assuming you are ok with your mom being on your policy.
