Tesla is about to get into the auto insurance game, CEO Elon Musk announced Wednesday.

On a call with investors, Musk said that Tesla is in the process of "building" what he called a "major insurance company," Business Insider reports. By the end of the year, he hopes to have launched in a handful of U.S. states, generating premiums and rates for drivers based on data collected by their cars' internal sensors.Elon Musk says Tesla is launching an insurance company

Right. He also said self driving would be deployed in 2019, robotaxis in 2020, and said the rescue diver that saved those children was a pedophile. All lies.

He also said two years ago he would launch Pravda, which he never did. He's been caught and seriously penalized for significant lies about Tesla in the past as well.

Hopefully this goes better than his last insurance program, which was a failure, based on lies.

He's a smart guy, and he's done some incredible things, but he has a well documented history of lying, which has gotten him into numerous legal situations.

There is tons of room in the insurance industry for technology to change it and I welcome it.

He has been bragging about setting up an insurance company for years. Unfortunately I think setting up an Auto Insurer that insures Electric (Potentially) Self Driving Autos - could be a huge issue, some day.

Exactly who is responsible for an accident if the software code is not updated correctly on one of his vehicles? There is lots and lots to be worked out here.

In addition, as we all know the regulatory environment in the world of insurance is high, for good reason.
