F 'n I

I am working with a 72 year old female, who has COPD. She currently has AARP Med Supp Plan I. I wanted to move her to Plan F, BUT:
  • even though they are not offering Plan I for new sales, does that mean that if she has one of the conditions listed in Section 6 of the application, she will automatically get the Level 2 premium rate if she is moved to Plan F?
  • she's been on Medicare since '99, and has had Plan F up to two years ago. Is she just stuck with Plan I?
My gut is telling me to keep her on Plan I (even though she doesn't like the premium, compared to Plan F). She doesn't want to cost share or pay copays.

Advise?

She would get the Level 2 rate for Group 2. I'm assuming this is GA. A 72 year old N/S with COPD for a Plan F would be looking at $250.12 per month. If she was in a zip code where the Select F was offered, you could put her on that for $191.62 per month.

What is her current premium for her Plan I? If it is still the old rate of $173.50, she is looking at an annualized premium of $2082 plus the $155 for the Part B deductible for a grand total of $2237. An F plan would cost her just over $3000 per year. Select F would be $2299.44 on the year.

Switching her to a Plan F doesn't appear to be the best decision financially at this point.

DS4 nails it!!!

Wounder if her Plan I has a formulary with quantity limits, prior authorization, and or step therapy for her COPD drugs? I thought a person had to drop the drug coverage once they join a PartD plan? Just asking some questions...
