Favor from You P&C Guys...

My assumption is that many, not all, of you don't want to get involved with Medicare & Medicare Insurance. Do your clients ask you about it? If so who do you refer them to? How did you decide on who it was that you would refer that business to?

I'm trying to come up with a strategy to become the go to guy with local P&C agencies to help with their clients aging into Medicare or wanting a review. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a pretty active agency & I maybe get 5 calls per year on this. I refer them to one of my clients who does supplement plans...because he's the only person I know that does it.

I appreciate that insight on how few calls you get. However five is more than zero though, so I guess I need to be thinking about lots of agents to contact. Thx.

3-5 times a year I get asked about Medicare products.

I have a friend who is an independent Medicare agent that I refer them to.

He generally closes them. I get nothing more than a free lunch once a year.

(spoiler alert - brutally honest reply below)

You'll find P&C agents are a paranoid bunch. They are also greedy. A lot of agencies have a person in house that does health and health related stuff so basically, this is already covered. The remaining ones are the ones that get 3-5 vague inquiries a year.

Out of that, most P&C agents are very very very hesitant to refer their clients to another insurance broker who may have a deal with another P&C agent to refer business to them. Its a quick way to start losing business. Not always, but why risk it?

I encourage you to talk to agents and make the offer. Some may do it and it is always good to have a relationship with local agents. If you are using this as one of 5 marketing sources, great. If you are thinking this can be a primary source of referrals, you might need to rethink it.

I haven't quite finished my first year in business for myself, and I've been asked about health insurance precisely 3 times.

Reverse the roles - how often are you asked about p&c? Probably about as much?

Thing is, I'd happily refer those clients to a L&H guy, but I'd want it to be a reciprocal thing. So I probably wouldn't refer business to someone working with a half dozen other IAs.

Medicare is a big part of my business, the larger agencies in my area all have a person that handles Medicare for them.
If you have an existing Medicare book perhaps you could work with an agency to refer your people to them for auto/home.

Why not partner with a P&C agency. Offer them a good deal on a % of your commissions and in return you work their book.
