Getting appointed with companies. What is the process ?

What is the step-by-step process to get appointed? I understand that its a different process for each company but can someone give me a general outline of what to expect?

Is it just an application? If so, what is included in application?

Will companies take a person who is not "hireable" with their past company due to personnel issues?

Does it matter how much experience you had with past companies?

Do you need references (personal/professional)?

Do you have to show them your business plan?

I know some of these questions are crazy due to my ignorance of the process...sorry in advance :)

Yes, they will take an agent with "personal issues" unless the agent was caught in the break room with farm animals.

No, experience doesn't matter.
If it did there would be very few insurance agents.

Do you need references (personal/professional)?

If your mother thinks you are a good guy nothing else is needed.

Do you have to show them your business plan?

No, most agents business plan is just to make money.

There are no ignorant questions, only ignorant people who accuse others of asking ignorant questions.

I can only speak about Med Supp companies.

See above for the answers to your questions.

Re: Getting Appointed with Companies...the Process?

Appointment forms are required in order to become Appointed with any carrier.

You must be licensed in the states you're requesting an Appointment with.

Typical questions are about your criminal background, financial background (as it relates to previous bankruptcies and about any indebtness that you presently have with any carrier).

Have you had any complaints filed against you, have you had any lawsuits against you, do you presently have E & O insurance, have you had any claims against you, any license suspesions, etc, etc.

Hope that helps......

Thanks Arthur....and everyone. Your guys are the best. I guess your response reminds me of my E&O question. Will I need to obtain E&O prior to seeking appointments, after licensing?

Some carriers require it....others do not. It just depends.

Good luck!

Re: Getting Appointed with Companies...the Process?

MrProducer, how do I go about getting an E&O carrier? Look up "E&O" on Google? Your thoughts are appreciated.

My IMO suggested this source. It's who they use, and personally, I haven't found anyone cheaper (although most are about the same price). Annually it runs $475, and they have a payment plan available.

NAPA Direct E&O Insurance for life & health agents
