Getting Started in Lafayette, IN

Total newbie to the industry. I've been talking with an Independent, State Farm and Farmers. I'll be meeting with Western Southern and Bankers Life & Casualty. I am considering trying to go ahead and pay for classes on both exams and get both tests out of the way. Provided I can pass them. I'm still not totally sure just yet. I know that I need training and would greatly appreciate any input.

I've been in the commercial satellite communications industry for around 25 yrs and have had store-front business for about 10 yrs. I moved up from Texas 3yrs. ago and that job market is nil in this area.

Thanks again for any assistance.

Sounds like the captive route is the way to go for you BUT keep in mind that LaFayette Life is right in your hometown. If you decide to go the independent route, I would have to assume that you couldn't be in a better place.

They are owned by Western Southern but it is an independent channel.

My opinion is that all of the opportunities you named are preferable to Bankers.

A heads up on Lafayette Life.....they are s-l-o-w at approving and issuing policies. I've got a case pending now that required a paramed exam, which was completed April 3rd. Lafayette Life received the paramed exam on April 13th. They received the blood profile and urine specimen on April 15th. Six days later it's still pending.

Also, I have seen them take 3-4 days to issue a policy after it's approved!

Good company, highly rated, but their too slow. Two underwriters for the company....I think they need more.

Good to know. I found the same thing with Protective. I've never actually used LaFayette.

And Settlers is the slowest final expense company I've ever dealt with. I keep writing them because I like a lot of things about them. But now I tell people it will be at least 4-weeks before you get a policy.

It seems like all the companies have slowed down to a crawl.

I know a manager for western southern and he had good things to say about that company. How much could i rely on that information? Hmmm not sure but i figured i would pass it along.

Thanks for the input. I'm presently studying for my Life & Health and will take my test middle of May. I've missed connections with my contact at Western & Southern but will still try to meet with him.

Wow I finally met up with my contact at W&S. Before I met up with him I had taken some kind of pre-test for the company online. Evidently my score wasn't to their standards. I took this to help speed things along and show some initiative. My contact said he had wished I had talked to him before taking the test. Now his hands are tied and the company will not even consider allowing me to re-apply for 1 year. Honestly this sounds strange to me. But either way it looks like door is closed.

Now I'll just have to look for other opportunities.

I did the same thing you did and took the test and it is the first time in 30 years of sales I didn't get a follow up after the test. I think it had more to do with the income questions
