Going Independent in Ohio

Hello everyone! My name is Nathan Lewis. I have been selling insurance in Ohio since October of 2013. Up until now I have worked for Lighthouse Insurance Group in Independence, OH and learned alot. However, I feel ready to venture out on my own now. I have the most experience with the health insurance side of things but now I am going to focus just as much on life insurance too. Any advice would be great! I have been researching and prospecting non-stop for a few weeks now while I await some appointments to be approved so I can move forward.

Whoever you contracted with make sure they offer an upfront release just in case anything goes south. You might want to check out the insurance Pro Shop as well. Welcome to The Forum

What is an upfront release? I'm definitely going to check out the Pro Shop! This is my first go at handling all of my own paperwork, appointments, etc. Thanks for the feedback.

My main market for now will be final expense. I'll market multiple ways for all products but for final expense it'll be through joint ventures with local funeral homes and cemetaries on top of my local community groups like my church and my youth baseball league that I coach in. I haven't even finished contracting 100% with any company as a direct independent broker and I have prospects waiting on me. I got ahead of myself but I'm not complaining. I maintain my honesty with them to wait for my contracting and presell them on their benefits of working with me to keep them patient.

I know all too well on Anthen BCBS altering their commissions. Pretty much all health carriers have done so because they are losing money under the ACA now that they have to pay for pre-ex claims. I can't begin to tell you how many clients I have talked to that are running into health companies not paying claims in their network even with low to mid range deductibles being satisfied/billed on the clients end.

Hey Nathan,

Congratulations on going out on your own and living the dream! I assume you are starting your own agency. If you need any help with an Agency Management System let met know.

I work for a company called TechCanary who is partners with Salesforce and we offer an Agency Management System on the Salesforce platform.

Furthermore, since you are just getting started I can give you a nice discount to help you for the first year. E-mail me at [email protected]

Nevertheless, Nathan congrats again on going out on your own!

All the best,

Sam

Thanks Sam. I'll keep you in mind but for now I am keeping things in my own hands. When I experience enough growth to start hiring agents around me I will check into what you can offer. Best of luck with your business ventures.
