Great Forum! Hi from NC.

I've been browsing this forum for several days off and on, and it looks like a great resource. Many thanks to the persons responsible for making it such a wealth of information.

I am Coach, from the Raleigh NC area. As just a short intro I will tell you a small amount about me. I worked previously in the insurance industry for about 5 years in the 90s when I lived in WV. The first two was with a captive company selling critical illness (cancer) policies door-to-door. Looking back on those times it was very stressful but also fun in a strange way. Surprisingly, I made pretty decent money, but I was smart enough to realize that there was no way that only being able to offer one policy was really meeting the needs of my clients.

So I went out on my own and offered life and health products, annuities, got my Series 6 and 63 and even offered variable products. I did OK, not great, but made enough to pay the bills. In 1999 I moved to NC for a good opportunity and left the business. I have never regretted the move as it has been great for us financially, but yet I always miss the business...especially since I have previous clients still call me for advice or wanting to buy more coverage.

I currently work in the mortgage business. I started as a loan officer, and was promoted to Sales Manager, and promoted several more times to Chief Operating Officer of the company. The money has been great and I have really enjoyed this aspect of financial services. However, I have always felt that I needed to be able to offer more than just mortgages to feel I am offering people solutions to their financial needs.

One thing I have learned in sales over the years is that once people trust you with any part of their financial picture, they normally will trust you to handle other parts as well. I get asked all the time about life insurance and if I sell it, or who I'd recommend.

Now I find out that our company owner is closing up shop and going to pull his cash out of the business to go do other things that he wants to do in life since he has been so successful over the years, but no longer enjoys the mortgage industry. (It has gotten quite frustrating that there seems to be no common-sense underwriting anymore.)

Anyway, several of the people in our current company have said they will come to work for me if I start my own, since they enjoy working for me so much. A few have insurance backgrounds and would like to be able to offer that as well...with a few even saying they may want to focus primarily on the insurance side of things.

I am fortunate enough to have the financial ability to start my own company and not have to worry if things are slow for even quite a few years (although I don't think I'll have to worry about it being slow for that long with some good people coming with me and our combined reputations). I will be setting up a commercial office location to work from and offer office space to my employees.

I'd like to get insurance licensed in NC within the next 30 days and possibly some other states in the very near future. Any advice that anyone here can give regarding pre-licensing study resources that you really liked, to what companies to go with (I will most definitely not be a captive agent, but will strongly consider a good IMO/FMO) is greatly appreciated.

Wow, sorry for the long post. I didn't intend it to be that way and I am not always this long-winded, I promise! I really look forward to getting to know many of you here.

Welcome! I am new here too. I am not in the insurance field but I am here to find out more (along with my wife) about features I can build into software to help insurance agents and she is here to learn more about selling insurance.

See you around!
