Green in the Evergreen State

Hey Insurance Forums!

I am a brand new P&C producer in Washington State. I have no industry experience, and I am 24 years old.

My background is in sales. My degree is in business management. I sold Cadillac's for about 6 months and software for the last 2 years. To work my way through college, I cold-called for our admissions office and worked various customer service/retail type jobs.

I was recruited out of my previous job by a local independent agency. They have given me a salary + commission structure for my first year, and from reading around on the forums here it seems I am pretty fortunate to have a guaranteed salary to start off. The company is great, and the partners all seem like stand up guys who are honest and successful.

While all the partners are great salesmen in their own right, they are all still active and don't have a lot of time to train me in the nuts and bolts of insurance. They paid for a great commercial training program for me to go through, but it is all pretty theory-centered and doesn't really help me with day-to-day operations. I am here to hopefully learn, from reading and interaction, what the successful guys and gals are doing, and how I can apply it to my new life in insurance.

I am very green... just the other day I had to ask what a B.O.R. was (don't laugh). But I am a fast learner, and once I have learned something I don't typically forget it. I am hoping some of you guys can help point me in the direction of some helpful material for a new guy starting out.

I am a month in, and I have already been hammering the phones, first calling friends and relatives, and asking for referrals. The personal lines seem to come pretty easy, but as for the commercial stuff I could definitely use some resources. On the commercial side, I have written and bound an excavation company and auto repair shop... I definitely want to find a niche at some point, but do any of you have suggestions as far as good industries to get my feet wet in commercially?

Thanks for any help you guys give me, now and in the future!
