Greetings from Missouri!

Until earlier this year, I had a successful and distinguished career in business to business sales, working predominantly within the Hospitality Industry. I liked what I did for a living (for the most part!) and the compensation package worked well for me. Earlier this year, the territory went through some dramatic changes in terms of the customer distribution and despite my best attempts to keep the terriory viable, I was informed that the company would be eliminating my territory. I found myself on the job market. I also found myself thinking that being self-employed might be a good idea for me.

The first "wave" of people that contacted me were in the insurance industry (something that I knew absolutely nothing about previously) and for the most part, I did not follow-up with the people that contacted me. I wasn't inticed by their messages. I wasn't interested in learning more about them. I did research and found disparaging remarks about most of them (Combined Insurance, United American.)

Then NASE / MEGA came along... I fell for their pitch... I researched them, but I guess that I didn't look in the right places. I had no idea how many people hae been burned by them. That was earlier this fall.

Since then, I have received my license, gone though training, and I actually sold a couple of policies. Then I started to get leads for people who had actually heard of NASE / MEGA and the negativity of their responses when receiving a call from me prompted me to start researching again. That is when I found this forum. That is when I found an abundance of information about the NASE and MEGA that really opened my eyes.

What have I gotten myself into? What do I do now?

I've lost months of valuable time, and I've invested a lot of myself into "working the system" and learning about the industry. I have very little to show for it, with the exception of a few hundred dollars, a couple of worthless certificates, and a distinct feeling that I have been duped.

I have a question for those of you that started out like me, and (from what I have read on these forums) realized that the products being marketed could actually end up hurting people. How did you make that realization? What was your next move? How long did it take for you to accept the fact that "you might have your wagon hitched to the wrong horse?" How did you find the "right horse"?

I wish that I would have found this forum sooner!!!

Well I can understand your concern and frustration. Currently I am in a similar, yet totally different situation. After 20 years in selling mostly P&C and some health, I find myself relocating and probably going solo in Health Insurance. Change is always scary. But change you must.

Before getting into insurance at all I tried several sales jobs, some of them even less scrupolous than MEGA, including one selling carpet in the home. That company was eventually run out of the state by the Attorney General. The point I am heading towards is all of this is a learning experience and you have knowledge which could take you to the next step in Health Insurance.

I'm not in Missouri, still I'm sure it is not much different than Michigan or any other state. There are some good General Agents out there that will help you get started. There are good agencies willing to hire a good agent. There are comnpanies willing to hire good people.

I sugggest you find the closest chapter of Health Underwriters (National Association of Health Underwriters ) . They generally meet monthly for Breakfast or Lunch. Many chapters will even comp your first visit. Health Underwriters meetings are filled with good agents and company people more than willing to share their knowledge and advice. Go, ask where to find a good GA or Agency. It can be a profitable and rewarding carreer.

Thanks to those of you that have contacted me after I wrote this post originally, and for the comments that have been made on this forum as well!

Since I would prefer to be able to sleep at night with a clear conscience, I have recently take the initial steps to become appointed with Assurant and I will be looking for other opportunities as well to diversify my ability to offer a wider range of products to my prospective clients. MEGA and I will be parting ways soon. I haven't informed them yet of my decision to "move on" but it does appear as if they have figured things out since they have stopped sending me leads. Oh well... Im just glad that I figured things our "sooner as opposed to later..."

Thanks again everyone! I really do appreciate it!!!
