Hey all,

I currently work as a producer for a State Farm agent here in Florida. I got hired straight out of college and have been with State Farm for 2 years now. I have my life & health license, my Resident General Lines Agent license, and my mortgage license. I focus mainly on auto, life, and bank; although I occasionally also write HO and health. I'm not very experienced outside of personal lines. I recently began focusing on becoming a State Farm agent and in doing some research on State Farm Agency I found this forum. The things I read here gave me great pause on whether or not I should become an agent for State Farm, as it appears it is no longer the great opportunity it once was. I am now researching becoming either a captive agent for another company or an independent agent.

Anyway, that's a little about me. I look forward to learning and sharing knowledge with you guys here. Thanks!

Hey Matt,

Is the Agent you are working for brand new? They use the term TICA in California, not sure if the same in Florida?
I worked for an SF Agent. I talked to the Regional Sales person about the Aspirant Program I believe is what is called.
They definitely focused on what I could make working for as an SF Agent with their salaries, and painted me such a great future. Which maybe yes I could have had. Who knows.
I then met an Agent that was a TICA, and he was a very successful one in the region, but he definitely felt the heat. That is part of what turned me away from being a Captive Agent.
I think part of the reason of becoming an Agent with your own office is the benefit of having your own business and the freedom that may come with a successful one, thing is I saw how much SF would still be on my boss' back to write this and that after being with them for so many years. That's not freedom, not the one I would want anyway.
Even the Agent I worked for told me they put those TICA guys through hell.
It's really good that you are trying to see your options here with different points of view. Hope you get some helpful info that helps you decide on the Agency path you want to take.
